A rare
and attractive piece of Arts and Crafts furniture made by Shapland
and Petter* for Gillows in the 19th century.
The sideboard is of very high quality being made of quarter cut solid
oak. The quarter cutting of oak produces a very decorative figuring
known as ‘medulary rays’.
The sideboard has a raised decorative back with turned finials, an
undulating frieze to the front and side and stands on 6 turned legs
with small pad feet.
There is a deep central drawer stamped ‘Gillows’ and a
cupboard on each side with locks marked ‘Gillows Lancaster’.
The left hand cupboard has a drawer beneath and the right side has
a dummy drawer and integral 6 division sliding bottle rack. The drawer
linings are of solid oak and of dovetail construction. The copper
oxidized handles are of a type exclusive to Shapland and Petter* Like
many manufacturers their designers remained anonymous.

See D.
Bennett ‘Shapland & Petter of Barnstable, Arts and Crafts
Furniture’ for references to Shapland & Petter making furniture
for Gillows, page 72. Shapland and Petter furniture has become increasingly
sought after by collectors and the prices of the best examples of
decorated furniture have continued to increase in recent years as
more is known about the company and their very distinctive style.
Whilst the company was highly innovative in machine technology, they
also employed many craftsmen who worked with their hands in woodcarving,
marquetry work, design and application of decorative copperwork and
other artistic embellishment in the true Arts and Crafts tradition.
