A
late 17th Century Goanease Dutch Carved Ivory letter Seal.
Ref: SN256
This
intricately carved ivory seal shows a male and female in European dress
embracing. A third male figure is carved to the reverse. He is wearing
a turban and has one hand pointing downwards and the other partly concealing
his face.
The carving is executed in very fine detail with great attention to
the faces, hair and clothing. The woman's hair is delicately carved
so that it stands away from her neck. Similarly the man to the reverse
has his hand carved away from his neck.
The figures stand on a short stem with a white metal cap to the base,
probably silver but unmarked.
Condition:
There
is some wear to the faces of the couple through handling, the ivory
has yellowed with age and there is a hairline crack to the reverse running
through the male figure.
Measurements: height: 9cm.
