This
beautifully coloured large partners desk is made of solid oak, quarter
cut in many areas giving an attractive lighter flecking contrasting with
the rich brown base, known as 'Medullary Rays'.(See the side panels of
the desk for an excellent example of this technique).
The
desk has recently been professional restored and has a new hide writing
surface with gilt and blind tooling, which blends beautifully with the
oak.
The
top has a bull nosed edge and is fitted with 3 draws on one side and two
central drawers with useful pull out writing slides on either side supported
by hinged 'lopers'. This is an unusual feature for a desk from this period.
The
reversible pedestals are fitted with 3 drawers on one side and cupboards
with a central shelf on the other which offer a variety of arrangements
for the top and the pedestals. The side panels and door are very attractively
marked as mentioned above. The bases of the pedestals are fitted with
plinths.
The
cupboards and drawers have the original locks and keys with 'Gibbons,
Wolverhampton' marked on them. The drawers and doors have turned oak knobs
and the drawers are lined in cedar wood with traditional dovetail construction.
As
a partners desk it is of course finished all round and designed to be
freestanding in a room and does not need to placed against a wall.
The desk is made in 3 parts; the top and 2 pedestals are all separate
parts which enable ease of access and transportation.
