This
superb quality library table is of Gillows standard and may indeed be
attributable to them. Made in the 1840's the table is a combination of
solid walnut for the base and highly figured veneers for the top.
The top
has an antique finish mid-tan leather writing surface with blind and gilt
tooling surrounded by a band of figured walnut cross banded with kingwood.
The table has a thumb moulded edge with rounded corners. Beneath are two
cockbeaded drawers of hand made dovetail construction with mahogany linings
and original turned wooden knobs. To the reverse are two dummy drawers.
The rounded corners of the table are decorated with carvings of flowers.
The table
stands on turned and carved end supports and swept legs with ivy carved
feet and original brass castors.
The table
has a beautiful honey gold patina which has developed with years of care
and is in excellent condition with no evidence of major repairs. The table
has been french polished and a replacement writing surface fitted. It
is a rare table which is of the best quality.
This
table is an excellent match with the Victorian
bookcase SN382 in both the colour of veneers, the age and the style.
