A good quality and capacious English antique library or desk chair made from solid mahogany with a padded deep buttoned back in chestnut tan hide in an unusually complex design.

This is an extremely comfortable chair in which to sit with a very capacious deep saddle seat carved from a solid piece of mahogany 2 3/4 inches (6cm) thick. This makes it a very suitable chair for the larger size individual looking for a strong, well made, roomy chair.

This particular chair is illustrated in 'Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design' (page 166) which dates the chair at 1884 and attributes it to the 19th century furniture company 'Heal'. This was a family run business in which Ambrose Heal's Arts and Craft designs became internationally famous. The firm is the forerunner of the present day furniture company 'Heal's'.

The chair has well crafted serpentine arms and it stands on on baluster turned legs with the original brass and brown ceramic castors.

There is a deep bowed crinoline stretcher between the front legs which is attached to the rear legs by 2 short turned stretchers.

This unusual and well made antique chair is in excellent condition having recently had the polished surface revived and its back re-upholstered in hide.
