A stunning French Mahogany Desk of superior quality
made fro use in a library. It has beautiful matched flame mahogany
veneers all round and the outstanding colour and figuring of these
present this as a very special and expensive desk when it was made
circa 1880.
The writing surface is in three sections, a central
hinged slope with original adjustable support and two side sections.
The central slope was designed for viewing art works, maps or etching
etc. whilst seated at the desk. There are two further pull out writing
slides with matching writing leather. The writing leather is a new
replacement and decorated with blind and gilt tooling.
The writing surface is surrounded by a three inch band
of well figured mahogany with a bull
nosed edge and rounded corners. The frieze has a break front design,
to both front and back, with a long central drawer slightly recessed,
to the front. There are no drawers to the reverse as all drawers to
the top and right pedestal take up the depth of the desk.
All the drawers have flame mahogany matched veneers
with decorative brass escutcheons, brass locks, hand cut dovetails
and oak linings. The top drawer of the right pedestal also has a removable
organizer tray and a lockable inner compartment with its own original
key. The drawers and cupboards are opened with the key of which there
are 2 available. One of these keys is certainly an original.
The left hand pedestal has a cupboard to the reverse
designed for vertical folio storage. The dividers are not there but
the slots are still in place. These can be replaced by a central shelf
is required.
The desk is made in three sections, the top and separate
pedestals, for ease of transportation and installation. The pedestals
are each fitted with 3 drawers to the front and stand on plinth bases
with hidden castors.
This stunning antique mahogany desk is of the highest
quality with great attention to detail and it has been professionally
restored to enhance its original beauty.
This fabulous antique desk would make a real show stopper
in any room and a wonderful focal point of any traditional or contemporary
office or library.
