An 18th Century Country Oak
Grandfather or Long Case Clock by Rob Sidwell of Nuneaton. Date: circa
1780
This brass faced Grandfather clock, or tall
clock, has a 10 inch brass face is engraved with the makers name and
swags of leaves.
The Brass chapter ring has Roman numerals,
quarter hour divisions and trefoil mark for half the hour. The clock
has the original ornate steel single hand.
The single hand was an early design originally
seen in lantern clocks of the seventeen century. At the time this
clock was made precise time keeping was not considered a necessity.
The corner fitted cast brass spandrels are
of similar design to the engraving on the dial.
This antique longcase clock has a 30 hour
four pillar movement strikes the hour, has been recently serviced,
and works well. It has an interesting lever mechanism to set the strike.
The case is made from English oak with walnut
columns to the side of the hood. The long door has ogee molding to
the top and original hand made hinges.It stands on a box base which
has a shaped plinth.
This is a very original country clock.
