This is a handsome and very good quality antique bookcase
with attractive burr walnut veneers. The bookcase stands 7 foot 5
inches high, comprising of a glazed top with arched paneled doors
enclosing three adjustable shelves and cupboard base.
The cornice has a concave moulding below which is the
glazed top with arched paneled doors enclosing three adjustable shelves.
The central section has an attractive and unusual carved boarder.
The bookcase has working locks and keys.
The base has a pair of doors which are beautifully decorated
with matched quartered veneers giving a very decorative finish to
the piece.
All bookcases of this type in Walnut are veneers laid
onto a carcase of a less expensive wood. In this case mahogany is
used for the doors and sides and deal used for the remainder of the
cabinet work. It is by this method that the spectacular figuring of
the walnut veneers is achieved.
The bookcase has lovely rounded corners to the edges
and plainer veneers to the sides. It is in good original condition
without much evidence of restoration.
As can be seen from the photographs it has an attractive
honey coloured patina which would blend in easily with other lighter
contemporary pieces of furniture as well as with other traditional
antique settings.
The bookcase has been made in four sections; a cornice,
a glazed cabinet, a central base and a lower enclosed cupboard, which
enables ease of installation.
