This magnificent Antique Walnut Chest of drawers is English made in the French Style and has the side locking bar associated
with the Wellington Chest.
The top is the original antico verdi variegated marble with arcaded
brass gallery to the sides and the back.
The seven graduated drawers are mahogany lined with hand cut dovetail
joints and 5 retain their original dividing internal panels. The drawer
fronts have a raised carved boarder, central applied carving of leaves
and flowers and the original brass pull knobs.
To either side of the drawers are columns with Corinthian carved
capital and 'harebell' carving at the base. The right hand column
is hinged and is fitted with a Yale lock (latter addition). This column
and lock secures all the drawers.
The chest has a molded base with bun feet and the original brass
castors with brown ceramic wheels.
The chest has a most attractive patina and has had very little restoration.
It has been cleaned and the polished restored but otherwise the carvings
and moldings handles and top are all in their original condition.
French furniture was popular in the late 19th century and this beautiful
quality chest may well have been used in an office, library or bedroom.
